Emotions, gender and politics in Mexican women’s collectives.

Tipo: capítulo Año: 2025 Autor: Tommaso Gravante y Alice Poma Resumen: The aim of the chapter is to show how Mexican women activists’ emotions are constructed by gender and sociocultural context. The theory applied in this chapter is based on understanding emotions as sociocultural constructs (Hochschild, 1979, 1983) and on applying different typologies that have proven very useful when analyzing the different emotions that activists come to feel (Jasper, 2018). Along the chapter, we will discuss how Mexican women activists construct their moral emotions, such as fear, pain and anger, and some emotion management strategies they use to manage them, showing how these emotions interact with affective commitments, such as love, sisterhood, and trust. We will conclude by discussing some patterns we have observed in the changing emotional culture of the new generation of activists which are breaking some gender feeling rules.

The Role of Emotions in Climate Activism

Tipo: capítulo Año: 2025 Autor: Alice Poma y Tommaso Gravante Resumen: Emotions are part of action; they can mobilize and demobilize, energize or deenergize, strengthen collective identity or divide activists, and they also play a key role in strategic decision making and lifestyle choices. The analysis of the emotional dimension of social movements allows comprehending how activists understand the world around them, give meaning to their experience, and act consequently. This chapter discusses climate emotions (i.e., those that people can feel with the experience of climate change), from a sociocultural approach, focusing on their role in climate activism, and not on their effects on mental health or the nonactivist population.

Apego al lugar y marco de injusticia en la defensa del último río vivo de la Ciudad de México.

Tipo: articulo Año: 2025 Autores: Mariana Castañeda, Alice Poma y Tommaso Gravante Resumen: El objetivo del artículo es analizar el proceso de movilización en defensa del último río vivo de la Ciudad de México yde los bosques que lo rodean por parte de los vecinos enuna zona urbana marginal. El diseño de investigación sebasa en el enfoque cultural de la protesta y el análisis dela dimensión emocional del conflicto. La relevancia de los resultados de esta investigación reside en el hecho de que el conflicto analizado más que involucrar valores biosféricos se caracteriza por aspectos que incluyen la relación entre bosque/río e identidad colectiva, los agravios históricos que sufre la comunidad, y la relación con las instituciones.Esto conduce a que el conflicto sea enmarcado por los protagonistas como una injusticia social, donde la defensa del río y del bosque es un compromiso moral para defender su propia identidad y dignidad.
